Ever since we launched our iconic Speedgoat knife, we’ve received tons of requests for a similar knife with a full-sized handle.
Knife owners adore the Speedgoat’s light weight, size, shape, and thinness, but some fans want to forgo the paracord handle.
Enter the Speedgoat Ultra, a redesigned Speedgoat with a carbon fiber handle. While the Ultra’s geometry is different than its predecessor, it includes all the features owners love about our fan-favorite ultralight blade.
Why the Speedgoat Ultra?
The Speedgoat was one of our first evergreen products, right after the iconic Blackfoot. Early owners raved about it but requested a full handle in lieu of the paracord.
“What if I get blood on the paracord?” they asked. “How about dirt? How do I wash it off?” — all valid questions.
While our paracord handles are easy to clean and maintain, we understand the desire for a handle that can be wiped clean in milliseconds out in the field. Carbon fiber sheds grime in a way paracord doesn’t.
A few fans have asked if they can buy a loose handle and slap it on their Speedgoat. Unfortunately, that isn’t possible. The back end of the Speedgoat just isn’t designed to accommodate a hard handle.
The Speedgoat Ultra solves that problem. It’s identical to the original Speedgoat on the blade end, so you can use the same Kydex sheath, but the handle end has been redesigned to accommodate a carbon fiber handle. And because carbon fiber is so light, it adds virtually no extra weight compared to the original Speedgoat.
What Is the Speedgoat Ultra For?
The Speedgoat Ultra is ideal for hunters and backpackers who like a full handle on their blade.
Its light weight and durability make it perfect for long-range pack-out trips. It’s also small enough to be your next everyday carry blade, depending on your local regulations.
It’s also a great premium option for collectors. The smooth carbon fiber handle is more comfortable for long-term use than paracord and gives the Speedgoat a classy, exclusive flair.
Speedgoat Ultra Specs
The Speedgoat Ultra is a full tang knife with a very slight trailing point. It’s made from Magnacut steel right here in the USA, and like all our blades, it’s hand-finished in our facility in Montana.
It comes with the same Kydex sheath as the original Speedgoat, and the blade-end specs of the two knives are virtually identical.
The Speedgoat Ultra vs. the Speedgoat 2.0
We’ve explored how the Speedgoat Ultra stacks up against the Speedgoat — but what about the Speedgoat 2.0?
The Ultra and the 2.0 are extremely similar — they have identical edge geometry and near-identical weight. The main functional difference is that the Ultra is easier to clean. While paracord is still cleanable, there’s a vast difference between a wipe-down and a wash-down.
And just like the original Speedgoat, the handles on the Speedgoat 2.0 and the Speedgoat Ultra are not interchangeable. The Ultra’s handle is adapted to its unique shape. As convenient as it would be, you can’t unwrap your Speedgoat 2.0 and slap on a carbon fiber handle.
Final Thoughts
What do you think about the Speedgoat Ultra? I think it fills an important (and thus far unexplored) niche in our lineup. It’s MKC’s most premium inline knife, and we’re proud to introduce it to our fans.
