Ingredients
-
1 lb. of fresh raw fish (such as snapper, sole, or sea bass)
-
1/2 white onion, finely diced
-
1 1/2 cups fresh lime juice (approximately 8–10 limes)
-
1 large tomato, diced
-
1 medium cucumber, diced
-
1/3 cup cilantro, finely chopped
-
2 teaspoons salt
-
OPTIONAL: Red pepper flakes or sriracha for a spicy kick
Directions
Dice the white onion.
Cube the raw fish into bite-sized 1/2-inch cubes.
In a bowl, combine the diced onions and fish, then cover and submerge them in the fresh lime juice.
Dice the tomatoes and cucumbers and chop the cilantro.
Add the diced tomatoes, cucumbers, and chopped cilantro to the bowl of fish and onions. Season the mixture with salt to taste.
If you enjoy a bit of heat, add red pepper flakes or sriracha according to your preference. If not, skip this step.
Cover the bowl and allow the traditional ceviche to marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour or up to 24 hours (ideally on the longer side so the flavors can meld).
Serve alone, with tortilla chips, or on your favorite crackers.
Recipe Note
What to Serve With Traditional Ceviche
Drinks
- Classic Margarita: A tangy margarita complements the ceviche’s fresh flavors.
- Cucumber Mint Cooler: A refreshing cucumber and mint-infused drink offers a cool contrast to the spicy ceviche.
- Tropical Fruit Punch: Enhance the ceviche’s tropical feel by serving a fruity punch with pineapple and citrus notes.
Main Dishes
- Shrimp Tacos: Create a seafood-themed meal by serving traditional ceviche alongside shrimp tacos.
- Grilled Chicken Skewers: For those who prefer a mix of proteins, grilled chicken skewers with a hint of lime are a perfect match.
- Avocado Salad: A creamy avocado salad adds a smooth richness to the dish, balancing the ceviche’s acidity.
Helpful Tips
Take the time to cut your vegetables evenly. Large chunks of onion will throw off the flavor balance, so aim for smaller, uniform dice. Each bite should hold all the ceviche ingredients for a perfect flavor combination.
If the dish loses a little zing while marinating, pour out some of the lime juice and replace it with fresh lime juice to restore that zesty kick. Remember to check the salt level before serving.
Traditional ceviche tastes even better when made with freshly caught fish — especially if it’s one you caught yourself! I enjoy this dish best after a long day on the water.
