We tend to draw hard lines between field processing and kitchen prep. We pack separate knives for the field and keep our “nice” knives in the kitchen.
But what if we could bridge that gap with a single tool?
That’s exactly what we set out to do during our latest collaboration with Steven Rinella, host of Netflix’s “MeatEater” and a longtime advocate for the complete field-to-table journey. The result? The MKC x Meateater Sawtooth Slicer, a knife that challenges the boundaries between field and kitchen work.
A Name Born in the Wilderness
Named after the majestic Sawtooth Mountain bordering Montana’s Bob Marshall Wilderness, this knife embodies the rugged versatility of its namesake.
But don’t let its wilderness inspiration fool you. This is no crude field tool. The Sawtooth Slicer brings surgical precision to every task, whether you’re breaking down quarters at your tailgate or preparing a gourmet dinner at home.
This all-in-one workhorse debones, slices, cuts, and prepares. If you want to keep your knife kit small but capable, the Sawtooth Slicer will fit right in.
Because of the rate of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in deer, elk, and moose in the American Northwest, some legislators have introduced strict rules about transporting game between counties. In some locations, breaking down your animal right there in the field may not be a choice. In that case, the Sawtooth Slicer is great to have on hand — and to keep in hand when you bring your kill to the kitchen.
Precision in Every Slice
At just 0.101″ thick, the trailing point design delivers exceptional control for detailed work while maintaining the strength needed for field processing.
The belly of that black Cerakoted blade allows for smooth, controlled cuts that work equally well for navigating around joints and bones or executing precise incisions on your cutting board.
The Magic of MagnaCut
We chose MagnaCut stainless steel for the blade, and here’s why that matters: This cryogenically heat-treated steel offers an impressive combination of toughness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance.
Unlike many stainless steels that can be a pain to resharpen, MagnaCut remains friendly to home sharpening — though with our MKC Generations® program, you can always send your knife back to us for professional maintenance at any point in its life, even if it extends beyond yours.
Comfort Meets Control
The chunky, comfortable handle deserves special attention. We’ve engineered it without hotspots, meaning you can use this knife for extended periods without developing those uncomfortable pressure points that plague many knife designs.
The G10 material provides excellent grip even in wet conditions, and the careful contouring allows you to choke up for detail work or pull back for more powerful cuts.
Built for the Field, Ready for Anything
Despite its impressive capabilities, we’ve kept the Sawtooth Slicer compact enough for practical field use. At 10 5/8″ overall, it won’t take up too much space in your pack but still provides the length and leverage needed for serious work.
Each knife comes with a custom Kydex sheath, complete with adjustable retention and multiple carrying options.
More Than Just a Knife
Good tools should remove obstacles, not create them. They should encourage us to learn, try new things, and become more capable. That’s the philosophy behind the Sawtooth Slicer — you’ll feel it the first time you pick it up.
Whether you’re a seasoned hunter or are new to processing your own meat, this knife was designed to meet you where you are and help you take the next step in your field-to-table journey.
